California-based rap group Drop City Yacht Club was formed in 2009 by members A Wolf and Kristo, who originally operated under the name The Freshmen. Their collaboration effort led to the release of their first single “The Freshmen”. Combining their interests in pop and rap, the duo decided to take on a new member, producer and beat-creator THX, who had already been instrumental in creating tracks for E-40, Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, and others. As a trio, they released the song “Hello There” in 2011, and were releasing tracks very quickly thanks to the expertise of THX. The song was featured on the soundtrack for the film Think Like a Man, and they later followed it with songs like “Surf’s Up” and “The Fonz”, which displayed their rapping ability.
Through A&M/Octone Records, they released the single “Crickets” which featured a guest appearance from singer Jeremih. Though the single did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100 list, the music video that was released has gained over 2 million views. Following the success of this 2013 single, they released their debut album Crickets – EP, which was followed by a downloadable album in 2014 entitled Cure for Cold Weather. Member A-Wolf has since left the group for unknown reasons, yet Kristo and THX continue to release music.
