Eliud Kipchoge is a Kenyan long-distance runner born in Kapsisiywa, Nandi District, Kenya on November 5, 1984. He competes in the marathon and formerly the 500 meters. He is an Olympic gold medalist and currently holds the marathon world record with a time of 2:01:39 hours. In 2003 he won his first individual world championship title after winning the junior race at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. He set the world junior record for 5000 m. That same year he turned 18 and became the senior 5000 m world champion at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics. In 2004 he won a bronze medal for Kenya at the Olympic games in Athens and a bronze at the 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships. He has won silver medals at the 2007 World Championships, 2008 Summer Olympics, and the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In 2012 he switched to road running and made his marathon debut at the Hamburg Marathon and came in first. He has won 12 of the 13 marathons he has entered. In 2016 he won a gold medal at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics after winning the Olympic Marathon.
