Emmanuel Lubezki was born on November 30, 1964 in Mexico City, Mexico. He studied at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and received a degree in cinematography. He started out his film career in various movie and television productions throughout the 1980’s, but his first international hit wasn’t until 1993 with his independent movie Twenty Bucks.
Lubezki collaborated closely with a friend he met from film school, and worked on films like A Little Princes (1995), Great Expectations (1998), Children of Men (2006), and Gravity (2013). He also has either won or been nominated for prestigious awards, such as his Critics Choice Movie Award, BAFTA Film Award, and Venice Film Award. Films of his that have earned him these titles include Gravity (2013), Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014), and the Revenant (2015). This makes him the first cinematographer in history to win three academy awards in a row.
