Erasure, consisting of members Andy Bell (birth name: Andrew Ivan Bell), born on April 25th, 1964 in Northamptonshire, England and Vince Clarke (birth name: Vincent John Martin), born on July 3rd, 1960 in South Woodford, England, are a duo that specialize in the synthpop genre. As a teen, Vince Clarke was inspired by the band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark to start making electronic music. He went on to found the group Depeche Mode but left the band in 1981 and the group Yaz in 1982.
After meeting fellow band member Andy Bell and forming the group Erasure, they duo released three singles in 1985 with the third single “Oh L’amour” charting well in Australia. They released their debut album, Wonderland, in1986 and achieved a top 75 ranking on the UK Album charts and a Top 20 appearance on the German Album charts. They released their fourth single “Sometimes” the same year. The song peaked on the UK and German charts at number 2.
Erasure released the album The Circus in 1988 and hit the number 1 spot on the UK charts upon its release. The album was certified double platinum in the UK and platinum in the US with two Top 20 singles in “Chains of Love” and “A Little Respect.” The group would go on to release 15 more albums up to 2017.
