Fishbone is an American alternative rock band that formed in Los Angeles, California. The band first came together in 1979 with Angelo Moore on vocals, saxophone and theremin, Kendall Jones on guitar, John Norwood Fisher on bass, Philip “Fish” Fisher on drums, “Dirty” Walter A. Kirby II on vocals and trumpet and Christopher Down on keyboards, trombone and vocals. The band began to perform around the Los Angeles club scene, the first being the iconic Madame Wong’s in L.A.’s Chinatown. While performing, they gained new found friendships with bands such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Psi Com and Thelonious Monster. Even more so, the band’s constant gigging got them a signing with Columbia Records in 1983. Their first release was a 1985 single titled ‘Party at Ground Zero’ which was preceded by their first EP release, ‘Fishbone’. In 1987, the band release their first full length album titled ‘In Your Face’. Their 1991 album, ‘The Reality of My Surroundings’ was the band’s first commercial success, landing on the Billboard’s Albums Chart at number 49 leading to their first live TV performance on Saturday Night Live. Known for their fusion of rock and funk, reggae and soul throughout the 90’s, Fishbone received a significant cult following and continued to release music until 2006 with their album, ‘Still Stuck in Your Throat’.
