The Foo Fighters is a Grammy Award winning American alternative rock band from Seattle, Washington. The band was founded by Nirvana’s drummer Dave Grohl after the death of Kurt Cobain. Originally as a solo project, Grohl recruited drummer William Goldsmith, bassist Nate Mendel and guitarist Pat Smear in 1994. The band decided on the name Foo Fighters with inspiration taken from a World War II term for UFOs. By 1995, the band released their self titled debut album, ‘Foo Fighters’, mostly consisting of Dave Grohl’s solo work. The album’s single ‘This Is A Call’ launched the album into popularity and eventually turned the album platinum in the U.S. In 1996, the band released their second album ‘The Color and the Shape’ before drummer Goldsmith was replaced with Taylor Hawkins and guitarist Smear was replaced by Chris Shiflett. Their third studio album arrived in 2005 titled ‘In Your Honor’ before embarking on five more studio albums before their most recent album in 2017 titled ‘Concert and Gold’. The Foo Fighters have left a huge legacy in the grunge and alternative rock genre, with their “recognizable signature built upon the heavy, melodic, loud-qiet-loud template of The Pixies and Nirvana” according to AllMusic. Their presence in the music scene has won them at total of 28 awards, including 12 Grammy’s, 1 American Music Award, 5 Brit Awards, 6 Kerrang! Awards, 2 MTV Video Music Awards and 5 NME Awards. Even more so, the Foo Fighters have been award nominated 103 times since their first album. The band is still active today with members Grohl, Mendel, Smear, Hawkins and Shiflett with the addition of Rami Jaffee as a session/touring member on keyboard and piano. They will embarking on a tour around the U.S. and Europe to celebrate their 25th year anniversary since their debut album, ‘Foo Fighters’.
