Gary Oldman Bio

Gary Leonard Oldman was born on March 21, 1958 in London, England. Before making a name for himself on the big screen, Oldman enjoyed a successful career in theater. As a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company he appeared in Christopher Marlowe’s The Massacre in Paris (1980) and Hamlet (1987).

He made his film debut in Remembrance (1982) but his breakthrough movie role came as Sid Vicious in Sid and Nancy (1986) starring with Chloe Webb. His first notable role in a US movie was starring with Ed Harris and Sean Penn in State of Grace (1990). During the early 1990s, Oldman was one of a number of British actors finding Hollywood fame and were known collectively as The Brit Pack. Other members included Daniel Day-Lewis, Colin Firth and Tim Roth.

His award winning performance in Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) was just the first of many villainous roles in which Oldman would become famous for portraying. Just a couple of his bad guy roles include playing a terrorist in Air Force One (1997) and Pontius Pilate in Jesus (1999).

He is now probably most famed for his performance as Sirius Black in the Harry Potter movie franchise and first appears in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). In 2011, Oldman was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
