Geoffrey Rush Bio

Geoffrey Roy Rush was born on July 6, 1951 in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia. He enjoyed decades of success on stage before hitting the big screen. He starred in many Shakespeare plays such as The Winter’s Tale and Troilus and Cressida. His breakthrough performance on the big screen was in Shine (1996) when his role as pianist David Helfgott won him a Best Actor Oscar.

Rush is perhaps most famous for his role as Captain Barbossa in the Disney movie franchise Pirates of the Caribbean. Starring alongside Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom he has played the role in 5 movies. He earned critical acclaim as speech therapist Lionel Logue in The King’s Speech (2010) starring alongside Colin Firth. The role won Rush a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor.

Geoffrey Rush is one of the few actors to have won The Triple Crown of Acting meaning he has won a Primetime Emmy Award, a Tony Award and an Academy Award. More recently he starred as Albert Einstein in Genius (2017).
