Gilberto Silva is a former professional football player who played as a central midfielder. Born on 7th October 1976 in Minas Gerais, Brazil, Silva started his career with the America Mineiro football academy. He made his senior debut for the Brazilian club in 1997. He made 20 appearances for the club before joining Atletico Mineiro in 2000. After two seasons, he joined English football giants Arsenal. During his spell with Arsenal, he made a name for himself as one of the best defensive midfielders.
He won two FA Cups with Arsenal. After leaving the English club, he moved to Greece, where he signed with Panathinaikos in 2008. After three seasons with the Greece club, he relocated to Brazil, where he joined Gremio. He remained with the club for two years before returning to Atletico Mineiro. He received a call-up to the Brazilian national team in 2001. He went on to make 93 appearances. He retired in 2014.
