Gillian Welch Bio

Gillian Welch was born on October 2, 1967 in New York City. In elementary school, she would play folk songs for her friends after realizing her love for music, especially that of Bob Dylan and the Carter Family. After high school, Welch attended college in Santa Cruz, California and then the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. This is where she met her musical partner David Rawlings.
The pair has released multiple albums under each other’s names. Their debut album, The Revival, received a Grammy nomination for best Contemporary Folk Album. In 2002, Welch and Rawling collaborated with many other big stars to release two songs, “I’ll Fly Away” with Allison Krauss and “Didn’t Leave Nobody but the Baby” with Krauss and Emmylou Harris, on the soundtrack for O’ Brother, Where Art Thou? The album went platinum and won the album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. In 2015, the duo was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award for Songwriting.
