Born Claire Elise Boucher on March 17, 1988, Grimes is the stage name for the Canadian musician from Vancouver. Though she was studying at McGill University, she became engrossed in her pursuit of a music career, ultimately skipping her classes and resulting in the university kicking her out. In 2010, Grimes finally released her debut album Geidi Primes under the label Arbutus Records, which was put out on cassette. Later that year, she released her sophomore album Halfaxa, and was already supporting another artist Lykke Li on a North American tour by 2011. During the recording of her third album Visions, Grimes was extremely busy and did not get much sleep during any of the production, which clearly displays her dedication to her work. The album came out in 2012, receiving wide recognition for the single “Oblivion”, and earning her a spot on the Pitchfork Media list in the Best New Music category.
Late in 2013, it was announced that Grimes would be signed with Jay-Z’s company Roc Nation. She is frequently compared to the trailblazing female artists Björk and Enya due to her electronic/synthpop sounds and style. Her uptempo beats utilize the keyboard as much as synthesizers, and she is known to heavily layer the vocals on her tracks.
