GWAR Bio

Gwar is a metal rock band on the surface, but within it’s actually a huge industry in-joke among heavy metal geeks. There are no set members, but a rotating cast of oddballs from other bands. The performers are seldom billed as themselves; rather, they wear the huge foam and latex costumes and play the character of one of the Gwar band members, under names such as “Beefcake the Mighty” and “Balsac the Jaws of Death.” Sometimes other actors will appear in different costumes, cast as antagonists to the band members. It’s all a huge parody of heavy metal culture.

Gwar has also expanded into lines of toys, trading cards, comic books, and other tie-in products. It is the brainchild of the late Dave Brockie, who worked in other kinds of absurdist musical theater such as his original act, Death Piggy. Maybe someday, we can all have our turn playing in Gwar.
