English-born Jamaica Gyptian, born Windel Beneto Edwards, is a reggae singer whose music is heavily influenced in traditional roots, dancehall, and R&B. He began singing at church when he was only seven years old, and around this time his moniker ‘Gyptian’ was bestowed upon him by friends. The name came from Edwards’ habit of trying a shirt around his head and twisting his chin hairs to look like an Egyptian Pharaoh.
In 2006 came the singer’s debut album, My Name Is Gyptian. Edwards’ then spent a few years touring and building a name for himself before releasing his sophomore album, I Can Feel Your Pain, in 2008. After more touring – this time internationally – Gyptian finally released his third and most recent project, Love, Sex, & Reggae. He has collaborated previously with American hip-hop star, Nicki Minaj.
