Hamdi Ulukaya was born in İliç, Turkey on October 26, 1972. He is the founder and CEO of the Greek yogurt company Chobani. Chobani is considered a top brand in America.
He left Turkey in 1994 to attend business school in the United States. In 2005, he bought a yogurt plant previously owned by Kraft close to Utica in New York. He took a loan from the Small Business Administration to purchase the 80,000 square foot factory. He fired five people who were laid off by Kraft to work in the plant. He hired a master in yogurt making who also came from Turkey, and it took them 18 months to come up with the perfect recipe. He started selling the product in 2007 first to small stores in New York. Costco and BJ decided to carry the product in 2009, and their sales doubled.
