High On Fire Bio
High on Fire is a three-member sludge metal outfit from Oakland, California. It was founded in 1998 by guitarist/vocalist Matt Pike following the breakup of his previous project, the influential stoner metal band Sleep. The other members are Jeff Matz (bass) and Des Kensel (drums).
Their first album, The Art of Self Defense was released in 2000 on the now-defunct label, Man’s Ruin Records The following year, they secured a deal with Relapse Records and released three subsequent albums-Surrounded by Thieves (2002), Blessed Black Wings (2005), and Death is This Communion (2007)- to critical acclaim.
2009’s Snakes for the Divine was praised for its intensity but critiqued for its production. They responded to this in with 2012 De Vermis Mysteriis, a complex concept album that combined intricate songwriting with their signature intensity. They released their 7th studio album, Luminiferous, in June of 2015 to much positive acclaim.
