Producer and songwriter Hudson Mohawke was born Ross Birchard on February 11, 1986 in Glasgow, Scotland. Mohawke was the youngest DJ ever to be a finalist in the UK DMC DJ Championships at fifteen. In college, he DJed for Glasgow University’s Subcity Radio under the name DJ Mayhem. He changed his stage name to Hudson Mohawke after seeing a statue with that name in his apartment building.
After college, he signed with Warp Records. He had previously been featured on compilation albums such as “Choices Vol. 1,” “Choices Vol. 2, “ and “Beat Dimensions Vol. 1.” Mohawke gained a lot of attention for his EP, “Ooops!,” released in 2008. His debut album, “Butter,” was released in 2009. He was also featured on the compilation album, “Warp20 (Recreated)” that same year.In 2012, he began working with Kanye West, which led him to sign a production deal with West’s GOOD Music label in January 2013. He remained with Warp on a recording contract. Mohawke has produced tracks for artists such as Kanye West, Pusha T, Lil’ Wayne, John Legend, and Drake. He has remixed songs by Bjork, Battles, and Paolo Nutini, among others. His single, “Chimes,” released in December 2014 off of his “Chimes” EP earned him a number three spot on the Billboard Twitter Emerging Artists chart. His second studio album, “Lantern,” was released in June 2015. It reached number ten on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart and number nine of the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart.
