Ibtihaj Muhammad Bio
Ibtihaj Muhammad is an American saber fencer and author who is an Olympic medalist who is well known for being the first American to wear a hijab while competing at the Olympics. She was born in Maplewood, New Jersey, United States, on December 4, 1985. She joined the Columbia High School fencing team when she was thirteen, and after starting out competing with an épée, Ibtihaj eventually settled on the saber. After spending more developmental years at Peter Westbrook and Duke University, she turned pro. Her career highlights include an Olympic bronze, two gold medals at the Pan American Games, and team gold at the World Championships. Ibtihaj has written the books Proud: My Fight for an Unlikely American Dream, (Young Readers Edition) Proud: Living My American Dream, and The Proudest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family. She competed at the Rio Olympics against Yana Egorian, Manon Brunet, and Sofiya Velikaya.
