Itzhak Perlman, of Israeli birth and Polish extraction, was a violin prodigy in early childhood. At age three, he wanted to join the Shulamit Conservatory but was too small to hold a violin, so he practiced with a toy fiddle until he matured enough. At age ten, he gave his first violin recital. Even though stricken with polio from age four, Perlman adapted to his handicap and appeared on TV on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in his teen years.
Perlman has performed in venues including a State Dinner at the White House honoring Queen Elizabeth II, the New York Philharmonic’s tribute to the 100th anniversary of the Statue of Liberty, and a Presidential Inauguration, being awarded a 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom. He has conducted symphonies around the world and enjoys popularity well outside the boundaries of the classical music world.
