Janine Cunningham, popularly known as Jah9 was born in Montego Bay in Saint James, Jamaica. She is a singer and songwriter, born and raised in the Western rural town of Falmouth.
After spending some time in college, Jah9 began discovering her passion for music. Her music has been described as "jazz on dub", because her singing voice is influenced by Nina Simone and Billie Holiday, with the sizzling influence of the dancehall sound of Sizzla and the more potent dub rhythms similar to those of Augustus Pablo.
Although she initially started with poetry, Jah9 gradually progressed to the musical scene recording demos with producer Sheldon Bernard and working with the legendary Beres Hammond. Through Hammond, she signed with Don Corleon Records in 2010 and recorded the singles "Warning" and "Keep Holding On" with producer Donovan Bennett.
In 2013, Jah9 released her first album titled New Name. She has released three albums for VP Records including New Name (2013), 9 (2016) and the Note to Self, released on March 13, 2020. In addition to her music, Jah9 is highly involved in community activism, youth and arts advocacy, and teaches yoga.
