Jake Shields (born January 9, 1979 in Mountain Ranch, California – United States) is a professional wrestler and MMA fighter.
Influenced by one of his older brothers, Shields got into wrestling when he was in middle school. While attending Calaveras High School, Shields competed in the Amateur Athletic Union National Freestyle Championships and later qualified for the U.S.A/Fila Nationals & World Team Trials in different divisions. He proceeded to Cuesta College where he became a two time All American champion. In the late 1990’s, Shields began training kickboxing at the SLO Kickboxing Academy in San Luis Obispo, California, where he met future UFC hall of famer, Chuck Liddell.
In 1999, Shields made his MMA debut against Paul Harrison at CFF: The Cobra Qualifier 1999. He won the fight by knockout. In 2007, Shields signed a 3-fight contract with Elite XC. His first fight was against Renato Verissimo, whom Shields defeated. After Verissimo, Shields defeated Mike Pyle, Nick Thompson, and Paul Daley.
Shields made his UFC debut at UFC 121, where he secured a win against Martin Kampmann with a split decision. At UFC 129, he lost the match to the UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre via unanimous decision. After six more UFC fights, Shields moved on to the World Series of Fighting (WSOF).
