James Wan is a Malaysian-born Australian film director, screenwriter, and producer born in Kuching, Malaysia on February 26, 1977. He is best known for directing the films Saw, Dead Silence, Death Sentence, Insidious, The Conjuring, Insidious: Chapter 2, Furious 7, The Conjuring 2, and Aquaman. He is also known for creating the character Billy the Puppet from the horror film Saw. He made his first feature-length film in 2000 titled Stygian. The film won Best Guerrilla Film at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival. In 2003 he co-wrote the horror film Saw with Leigh Whannell. The film became highly successful and launched both of their careers. The Saw Franchise became the second highest grossing horror franchise behind the Friday the 13th films. Wan has also been the producer and director on an episode of MacGyver and the producer on the show Swamp Thing. He released a graphic novel in 2011 titled Malignant Man. In 2014 he started his own production company named Atomic Monster Productions at New Line Cinema. Throughout his career he has been nominated for a number of awards and has won an Australians in Film Award, a Fright Meter Award, two Gérardmer Film Festival Awards and more.
