Janiva Magness is an American blues, soul, and Americana singer and songwriter born in Detroit, Michigan on January 30, 1957. While in college, she studied to become an engineer and worked in a recording studio in Saint Paul, Minnesota. She moved to Phoenix, Arizona and started a band named The Mojomatics. The group became successful locally until they disbanded in 1986 when Magness moved to Los Angeles, California. In 1991 she released her debut studio album titled More Than Live and has since released the albums It Takes One to Know One, My Bad Luck Soul, Blues Ain’t Pretty, Use What You Got, Bury Him at the Crossroads, Do I Move You?, What Love Will Do, The Devil is an Angel Too, Stronger for It, Original, Love Wins Again, Blue Again, and Love Is An Army. Her album Love Wins Again earned Janiva her first Grammy nomination. Magness has released her music and albums through the labels Fathead Records, Blues Leaf Records, NorthernBlues Music, Alligator Records, and Blue Elan.
