Jeremy Irons Bio

Jeremy Irons was born on September 19, 1948 in Cowes, England. He started his career training at Bristol Old Vic Theatre and made his theater debut in West End theatre productions ranging from Macbeth, Much Ado About Nothing, The Taming of the Shrew and Richard II. Irons made his Broadway debut in 1984 with the play The Real Thing, and he earned a Tony Award for his role.

Irons earned a BAFTA for his first film role as well, in The French Lieutenant’s Woman. He had major roles throughout the 1980s in Moonlighting, Betrayal, The Mission and Dead Ringers. His role in 1990’s Reversal of Fortune earned him an Oscar. He starred in Kafka in 1991, voiced Scar in The Lion King in 1994 and had major roles in Die Hard with a Vengeance, Lolita, The Man in the Iron Mask, Being Julia, The Merchant of Venice, Kingdom of Heaven, Eragon and Margin Call. He joined the DC Extended Universe in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and will reprise the role in two later movies.

Irons also earned Golden Globes for his work on Brideshead Revisited in 1981 and Elizabeth I in 2005. He also played Pope Alexander VI in The Borgias.
