Joe McElderry, born Joseph McElderry on June 16th, 1991 in South Shields, England, is an English singer that appeared in the sixth season of the X Factor. Joe attended New Castle College to study the performing arts and won South Tyneside’s Young Performer of the Year award in 2008.
Joe auditioned for the show X Factor twice, once in 2007 and once in 2009. His audition piece was Luther Vandross’s “Dance With My Father.” With the tutelage of Cheryl Cole, he ended up winning the competition with his rendition of the song “The Climb.” After his win on X Factor, Joe signed to Syco Records. His winning song was released as his debut single and secured the top spot in sales in Ireland for singles for the week of December 11, 2009. In 2010 Joe released his debut album Wide Awake. The album debuted at number 3 on the UK Albums chart.
In 2011 Joe released his second album called Classic after winning the Popstar to Operastar competition. In 2012 he released the follow up album called Here’s What I Believe In. The album contains collaborations from artists such as Beth Nielsen, Chapman, Marcella Detroit, and Ludovico Einaudi. Saturday Night at the Movies, Joe’s fifth studio album, was released in 2017.
