John Lithgow Bio

John Lithgow is an American character actor, author, musician, singer, and poet born in Rochester, New York on October 19, 1945. He is best known for his roles in the television shows Dexter, The Crown, and 3rd Rock from the Sun. In 1972 he made his debut in film in the movie Dealing: Or the Berkeley-to-Boston Forty-Brick Lost-Bag Blues and continued landing roles in the films Footloose, Twilight Zone: The Movie, Out Cold, The Manhattan Project, Silent Fall, Leap Year, Dream Girls, Interstellar, and more. He made his Broadway debut in The Changing Room in 1973 and has since had roles on and off Broadway in the productions Hamlet, Once in a Lifetime, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, King Lear, All My Songs, My Fat Friend and others. In 1974 he made his debut on television in the show The Country Girl and has also had roles in the shows Tales from the Crypt, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Twenty Good Years, Dexter, 30 Rock, How I Met Your Mother, Drunk History and more. In 1999 he released his first album Singin’ in the Bathtub and followed it up with his second album Farkle and Friends. Both albums are for children. He has also written several children’s books like Marsupial Sue, I Got Two Dogs, I’m a Manatee, Micawber and others. Throughout his career he has been nominated for numerous awards and has won six Primetime Emmy Awards, two Tony Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards and many more.
