German opera singer Jonas Kaufmann was born in Munich on July 10, 1969. He is most recognized for his flexibility, having performed a wide range of opera parts in a number of different languages in recitals and concerts. His first overseas engagement, Cos fan Tutte, came in 1997. Kaufmann later traveled back to Germany to present German art songs with pianist Helmut Deutsch. The pair collaborated on many albums while touring abroad. Kaufmann agreed to permanent employment with the Zürich Opera in the year 2000. He made his American debut in 2001 as Cassio in the Chicago Lyric Opera's production of Giuseppe Verdi's Otello. In 2003, he appeared as Belmonte in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail, which was presented at the Salzburg Festival. However, Kaufmann's 2006 debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, when he sang Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata, marked a turning point in his career. He received a flood of offers from throughout the world as a result of the overwhelmingly positive reaction to his performance, which finally catapulted him into the centre of the operatic mainstream.
