Jonathan Nelson is an American gospel singer and songwriter born in Baltimore, Maryland on November 10, 1974. Nelson got into music after serving as a backup singer during a performance of Karen Clark-Sheard at his church. Nelson and his friends started practicing together and went under the name Purpose. The group released an independent album containing the song “Healed.” The song was heard by the gospel singer Donald Lawrence and eventually recorded by Lawrence becoming a hit in 2005. In 2006 Nelson won a Stellar Award for Songwriter of the Year for the song. That same year he self-financed the live album Live in Baltimore : Everything You Are. He was soon signed by the label Integrity Music and in 2008 released his debut studio album titled Right Now Praise. The album reached number 7 on the Top Gospel Albums chart. Nelson has since released the albums Better Days, My Name is Victory, Finish Strong, and Fearless.
