Born Kevin Brereton on February 20, 1972, in Toronto, Canada, the young rapper and singer would eventually adopt the stage name k-os (pronounced “chaos”). The name is intended to be an acronym for “Knowledge of Self”. As a singer, MC, and rapper, he is known for incorporating a variety of genres, including rap, reggae, and funk, among others. K-os debuted on the music scene with the release of his single “Musical Essence” in 1993, which he followed with his second single “Rise Like the Sun” in 1996. After taking a pause from the industry, he finally released his debut album Exit in 2002. Though he was already well on the radar, the album did not do as well as he had hoped.
His sophomore effort, however, provided wildly more successful. Joyful Rebellion was released in 2004, and went Platinum in Canada. Later, he released Atlantis: Hymns for Disco in 2006, which also went Platinum in the country. Seemingly without taking a break, K-os released his fourth venture Yes! in 2009, which was also highly acclaimed.
