Kamasi Washington is a jazz bandleader, doing the seemingly impossible: making jazz cool again in the age of alternative rock. His musical schooling started with Academy of Music of Alexander Hamilton High School in Beverlywood, L.A., and UCLA’s Department of Ethnomusicology. He recorded a self-titled album there with some schoolmates, and built his career from there.
Kamasi Washington has defined his own boundaries ever since, blending genres such as hip-hop, classical and R&B into his compositions. He’s toured or collaborated with Herbie Hancock, Nas, Snoop Dogg, the legendary George Duke, Chaka Khan, Flying Lotus, and the Pan Afrikaan People’s Orchestra, to name a few. But his album “The Epic” (2015) is his magnum opus, winning accolades from magazines Pitchfork, Rough Trade, and The Guardian, and charting #6 on Billboard’s Heatseekers and #3 on the Billboard Jazz Albums charts.
