Kat Dahlia Cuban-American singer born Katriana Sandra Huguet in Miami, Florida paid for her own debut EP and music video which eventually caught the attention of Sylvia Rhone who signed her to the new label Vested in Culture which is a collaboration with Epic Records. Kat’s first single for Vested in Culture is the track ‘Gangsta’ which MTV says is “filled to the brim with fierce rapping.” The video was filmed in Miami and shows the personal difficulties of Kat’s early life. Dahlia was chosen as BET’s “Music Matters” artist in 2013. Dahlia says her influences are The Doors, Bob Marley, BB King, Celia Cruz and Miles Davis. She mentions that reggae has an influence on her musical style. Kat’s video ‘Gangsta’ was played in the background of season 16 premiere of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Kat’s style is a mix of Hip Hop and Latin with some Reggae employed. Her song ‘Fuego’ and ‘Fire Man’ show off her lyrical ability while her songs ‘My Garden’ and ‘Walk on Water’ showcase her ability to dig into deeper emotions and ponderings of life.
