English singer and songwriter Catherine Bush, known as Kate Bush, was born July 30, 1958 in Bexleyheath, Kent, England. Having parents with artistic inclinations, Bush practiced playing the piano and violin at a very young age. At age 14, she started writing her own compositions, and by 16, a family friend had already introduced her to David Gilmour, Pink Floyd’s guitarist. Gilmour then helped her score a contract with EMI Records. Years following that, Bush would take intensive vocal training and learned dance and mime as she wrote her first album. 1978 marked her debut in the music industry when she released her first single entitled Wuthering Heights. The song became a huge success, and the album that followed that, The Kick Inside, benefitted from it. Since then, Bush had come out with nine other studio albums: Lionheart (1978), Never for Ever (1980), The Dreaming (1982), Hounds of Love (1985), The Sensual World (1989), The Red Shoes (1993), Aerial (2005), Director’s Cut (2011), and 50 Words for Snow (2011). In 2013, she became a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
