Kathy Griffin, born Kathleen Mary Griffin on November 4, 1960 in Oak Park, Illinois, is a prolific American comedian, actress, producer, and author. At the age of 18, she moved to Los Angeles in the hopes of launching a career in Hollywood. She took classes with The Groundlings, an improvisational group, and soon enough, she started dabbling in stand up comedy. However, the structure of a stand up seemed to work against her, and so started utilizing a more confessional-type approach on her shows. After a few years of live comedy shows, she finally was able to score a credited appearance on the TV series On The Television in 1989, and on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1990. But what catapulted her into fame was her stint as Brooke Shields’ ingénue in Suddenly Susan, which ran from 1996 to 2000. Since then, she went on to appear in numerous projects and write many TV specials. Her reality TV show, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List (2005-2009) gave her two Primetime Emmy awards.
