Khruangbin Bio

Khruangbin is a Thai-funk trio from Texas, comprised of Mark Speer (guitar), Laura Lee (bass), and Donald Ray “DJ” Johnson Jr. (drums). Speer and Johnson came together upon playing in a gospel band at St. John’s Methodist Church in Houston; Lee joined with them three years later. They named their group after the Thai word for “airplane.”

Khruangbin is a unique group with an international culture, uniting funk music with Thailand tradition, filtered through Texan atmosphere via using a barn to practice in. Their break came when they self-released a single of “A Calf Born in Winter,” which was sponsored by the band Bonobo, which led to a contract singed with the Night Time Stories label. their album “History of Flight” featured covers of some of their influences, including songs by Serge Gainsbourg and Yellow Magic Orchestra. The group has since taken headline tours in the UK and Europe and opening for the artist Father John Misty.
