Kim Chi is the stage name of the South Korean-American drag queen, television personality, and artist Sang-Young Shin. Shin was born in the United States on August 8, 1987. He spent his childhood in South Korea and eventually relocated to where he lives now, Chicago, Illinois. Shin started his career performing as Kim Chi in Chicago in 2012 and found success quickly in the Chicago drag scene. She is best known for her appearance on the eighth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2016 and became the first Korean-American drag queen to be on American national television. Kim made it to the top three of her season, but ultimately lost to Bob the Drag Queen. She has since been in several shows and YouTube videos since including RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked!, Straight Outta Oz, Vanity Fair: 100 Years of Drag Queen Fashion, and several others.
