Lawrence Rothman is a musician and visual artist from Missouri who resides in Los Angeles. At the ripe age of nine, he started writing songs and recording in his home studio. He also began donning costumes for various characters. Eventually, the young performer developed a distinctive, mature baritone that made its recording debut on the Mamaroma single "Montauk Fling”. Before Rothman joined Downtown Records/Interscope, the label released a few more songs, including "Kevin" and "#1 All Time Low." Later that year came the sombre single "California Paranoia" with Angel Olsen. It was one of several tracks from his full-length debut, The Book of Law, that were made public before its release in 2017. The album's production team included Yves Rothman, the brother of Rothman, and Justin Raisen, who used piano balladry and light synth pop to reflect the artist's personal struggles with gender identity and social alienation. Along with Olsen, the group worked with Marissa Nadler, Kristin Kontrol, Pino Palladino, Duff McKagan, Stella Mozgawa, and a host of other well-known musicians.
