Lee Greenwood Bio

Born on October 27, 1947 in South Gate, California, United States, Melvin Lee Greenwood is a famous country singer. Greenwood had a strong passion for music even as a child and taught himself how to play saxophone at the age of 9. Following his musical pursuits, he formed his first band The Apollos in 1962 which later changed its name to Lee Greenwood Affair. However, the band fell out in the 1970s and he moved to Las Vegas where he juggled two jobs; blackjack dealer during the day and singer at night. His remarkable talent took him to Nashville and earned him a deal with MCA Records in 1981. During the ‘80s, he racked up seven number 1 hits including “Somebody’s Gonna Love You” (1983), Going, Going, Gone” (1984), Dixie Road” (1985), I Don’t Mind the Thorns (If You’re the Rose)” (1985), Don’t Underestimate My Love for You” (1986), Hearts Aren’t Made to Break (They’re Made to Love)” (1986), and Mornin’ Ride” (1986). He is also known for his famous patriotic song named God bless the U.S.A” released in 1984. Greenwood has 20 major-label albums, more than 35 singles that charted on country music charts and multiple accolades under his belt. He has also presided over the National Council on the Arts for 6 years in 2008.
