Leland Melvin, a well-known astronaut, reality television actor, and social media influencer, was born in Virginia, United States, on February 15, 1964. Melvin was selected by the NFL team the Detroit Lions after having a successful collegiate athletic career as a member of the University of Richmond's Spiders football team; however, a hamstring injury ended his career. He started working for NASA in 1998 in the Non-destructive Testing division of the Langley Research Center, where he also started his astronaut training. This American astronaut, who served on STS-122 and STS-129 of the Space Shuttle Atlantis, rose to the position of Associate Education Administrator for NASA in late 2010. He made an appearance in episodes of the reality shows Top Chef and The Dog Whisperer. He and Alvin Drew are two well-known African-American NASA astronauts.
