Lorenzo Sonego Bio

Lorenzo Sonego (born May 11, 1995 in Turin, Italy), popularly known as “Sonny” is a professional tennis player with two title wins out of four singles’ finals played.

Sonego has enjoyed an illustrious career with a personal-best of 30 wins and achieved career-high No. 21 in 2021, sweeping Cagliari titles to become the first Italian champion on home soil in singles since 2006 and in doubles (with Vavassori) since 2005.

In 2019, Sonego broke into the top 50 after saving championship point in a game against Kecmanovic to win his first ATP Tour title at Antalya. He successfully upset world number one, Novak Djokovic, 6-2 6-1 en route to the 2020 Vienna final, a match that saw him become the first lucky loser to defeat Djokovic. He also set the record for the fewest games ever conceded to Djokovic in a match.

After winning a game against Dominic Thiem in May, 2021 en route to the 2021 ATP Masters 1000 Rome SF, Sonego became the first Italian semi-finalist at Foro Italico since 2007 and second since 1978. In 2020, Sonego defeated Taylor Fritz to advance to the Roland Garros 4th Round, winning the longest men’s singles tie breaks in tournament history along the way.
