Luis Fonsi, born Luis Alfonso Rodriguez Lopez-Cepero on April 15th, 1978 in San Juan, Puerto Rico is a singer and songwriter. His interest in music began when he started imitating stars of the popular music group Menudo. Luis studied music at Florida State University and was soon offered a recording contract by Universal Music Latin.
In 1998 Luis recorded his debut album entitled Comenzar (I Will Begin). The album charted in at number 11 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart. In 2000 he released the album called Eterno. The album contained a duet with Christina Aguilera called “Si No Te Hubiera Conocido.” In 2002 Fonsi opened for Britney Spears and recorded an English album called Fight the Feeling which included a single called “Secret” featuring Joey Fatone. By the time of his seventh album, Palabras del Silencio, in 2008, Luis has become a staple in Latin music. The album stayed at number 1 for multiple weeks on Billboard’s Latin Albums chart.
In 2009 Luis was awarded a Latin Grammy in the category of “Song of the Year” for the song “Aqui Estoy Yo.” Fonsi released two more albums up to 2008. In 2017 his song “Despacito” featuring Daddy Yankee reached over 4 billion views on YouTube and became a number one single on any chart it was on. The song was remixed to feature Justin Bieber later in the year and also went on to chart in at number 1 for multiple weeks.
