Lynn Whitfield is an American theater, television and movie actress, as well as a producer. She was born Lynn Butler-Smith, on the 6th of May, 1953, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, U.S. She started her acting career on stage, performing with the Black Repertory Company in Washington, D.C. Later on, she moved to New York, where she played on off-Broadway shows such as “The Great Macdaddy”. She earnerd further recognition when she played in Ntozake Shange’s “for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf”. She made her television debut in the NBC’s drama “Hill Street Blues” in 1981. But it was until 1991 that she got her major breakthrough, when she portrayed Josephine Baker in the HBO television film “The Josephine Baker Story”, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie. She was also nominated as Best Actress in a Miniseries or Television Film at the Golden Globe Award for that role. Since then, she appeared in more than 20 films including “All Things Fall Apart”, “Lap Dance” and “Nappily Ever After” in 2018.
