Mathangi Arulpragasam, known better by her stage name of M.I.A., was born in London to Sri Lankan parents on July 18, 1975. After attending art school to pursue film and graphic art, she befriended the members of a band named Elastica, whose documentary she filmed in 2001. The lead singer lent her his sequencer/drum machine, which she used to record the single that would make her famous: “Galang”. The single gained her extreme attention on the Internet, and it wasn’t long before XL Recordings, a British company, signed her. “Galang” reached #8 on the U.S. dance charts in 2003.
M.I.A. followed the single with the release of her debut album Arular, which reached #3 on the U.S. dance charts. The album was a spectacular statement on global conflict, and the singer had recorded all of it in her bedroom. It wasn’t until the release of her second album Kala that her international fame began to boom, and in 2007 the single “Paper Planes” became one of the most popular songs in the United States that summer. It hit #1 on the U.S. dance charts, and Kala was labeled best album of the year by various magazines such as Blender and Rolling Stone. “Paper Planes” went three times Platinum in the United States and in Canada.
M.I.A. followed the success of her two albums with Maya in 2010 and Matangi in 2013. She is also known to be active in social causes, especially the oppression of various peoples in Sri Lanka, and she commonly uses her music as a platform to spread knowledge of political issues.
