Madeleine Peyroux (April 18, 1974) is an American jazz singer and composer who began her career on the streets of Paris when she was a teenager.
Before gaining global success in 2004, when her album Careless Love sold half a million copies, she sung classic jazz and blues songs.
Peyroux was found by an Atlantic Records talent representative, and her debut album, Dreamland, was released by the label (1996).
With a group of seasoned musicians (James Carter, Cyrus Chestnut, Leon Parker, Vernon Reid, and Marc Ribot), she recorded cover versions of songs from the 1930s and 1940s (Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith, Fats Waller). She covered the song "Life is Fine" for a Rainer Ptacek tribute album a year later.
