Magnus Carlsen Bio

Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen (born November 30, 1990, Tønsberg, Norway), popularly known as Magnus Carlsen, is a Norwegian chess player most renowned for becoming the second youngest world chess champion in 2013 at age 22.

Carlsen learned how to play chess from his father when he was five. At the age of eight, he played in his first tournament. In 2002, Carlsen finished second in the boys’ under-12 division at the 2002 Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) World Youth Chess Championship, held in Iráklion, Greece.

He won his first tournament in January 2004, at Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands. In March, Carlsen competed at a blitz chess tournament in Reykjavík, Iceland, and defeated former world champion Anatoly Karpov, then drew in another game against former champion Garry Kasparov.

At the world championship match in November 2013, in Chennai, India, Carlsen defeated Anand in 10 games and became the second youngest player (after Kasparov) to win the world title.

At the 2016 world championship in New York City, Carlsen defeated Russian player, Sergey Karjakin, to clinch victory in style. He successfully defended his title at the 2018 world championship in London and in 2019, won the rapid and blitz titles in Moscow, thus becoming the first player to hold all three FIDE titles: blitz, rapid, and regular.
