Mara Elisa Camargo (Ecuadorian actress and activist) was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
She began her career as a contestant on Colombia's version of The X Factor. She decided to knock on doors and start acting in musical telenovelas after studying theatre as a child.
As a result of this, she landed her first leading part in Latin America, Maria Alegria in Mark of Desire.
Maria's international acting career took off once she relocated to Mexico, where she landed a number of villain roles on Televisa's primetime dramas. She was recognized in People en Espanol's "50 Most Beautiful" as a top contender in Univision's Mira Quien Baila.
Telemundo hired her as a primetime star, and her show set a new high for the network, outperforming its direct competition Univision.
