Mark Kelly (Democratic Party, born on February 21, 1964, in the City of Orange, New Jersey, United States) is a famous American politician, businessman, retired astronaut and a distinct member of the U.S. Senate from Arizona. He assumed office on December 2, 2020. His current term ends on January 3, 2029. He is the co-founder of Giffords, a nonprofit organization and super PAC that hopes to fight for stronger gun laws, holds the gun lobby accountable, and supports candidates who stand for safer schools & communities.
Kelly kicked off his career journey as a naval aviator in December 1987. In 1996, he joined the NASA Astronaut Corps and logged over 54 days in space. As an astronaut, he flew four missions to the International Space Station with the Space Shuttle Endeavour in 2001, 2006, 2008, and 2011. In the U.S. Navy, he flew 39 combat missions from the aircraft carrier USS Midway.
On June 21, 2011, Kelly announced his retirement from NASA, and two years later, started his political journey. In 2020, he won the 2020 United States Senate special election in Arizona. On November 8 2022, he ran for re-election to the U.S. Senate to represent Arizona and won the general election. He is married to former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords.
