Mateo Kovacic is a Croatian professional soccer player who plays as a midfielder in Europe’s top soccer leagues. He was born in Linz, Austria, on May 6, 1994.
Mateo spent his formative years with the youth setups at LASK and Dinamo Zagreb, and he turned professional in 2010 when he signed with the senior Dinamo Zagreb squad. He has since represented Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Chelsea, and throughout his time with Chelsea, Mateo played alongside Kai Havertz, Enzo Fernández, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Mason Mount.
His career highlights include winning the UEFA Champions League, La Liga, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, Prva HNL, Croatian Cup, and Supercopa de España. He has also been named 2019-2020 Chelsea Player of the Year and 2011 Croatian Football Hope of the Year.
Mateo has also been part of Croatia’s senior soccer team since his debut in 2013, and he was a part of the Croatia side that made it to the finals at the 2018 FIFA World Cup held in Russia.
