Matthew and the Atlas are a British folk-rock band whose music straddles the line between acoustic traditionalism and a modern embrace of electronics.
They were founded by singer and songwriter Matt Hegarty. Hegarty, who is from Aldershot in the Rushmoor district of Hampshire, England, began playing guitar at the age of 15 and quickly joined a band that specialized in hard alternative rock, such as System of a Down and Smashing Pumpkins.
Hegarty has always written songs, but he became more serious about it after discovering the work of singer/songwriters such as Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, and Jeff Buckley, as well as modern bands such as Iron & Wine and Sufjan Stevens.
