Coming from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, Metric was formed in 1998. The band started when Emily Haines met James Shaw where they began recording demos which soon became part of Metric’s debut EP entitled “Mainstream.” In 1998, the two relocated to Brooklyn, New York where they collaborated with Torqui Campbell and Chris Seligman of Stars. Soon, Amy Millan also joined.
They were scouted by music publishers who made them work with producer Stephen Hague in London. Metric’s full-length “Grow Up and Blow Away” was made soon after their move. Metric signed for Restless Records in 2000. However, Restless was bought by Rykodisc which cancelled their supposed-to-be release in 2001. Fast-forward, Metric signed under Everloving Records which finally released their second album “Old World Underground, Where Are You Now?”
