Michael Shannon was born on August 7th, 1974 in Lexington, Kentucky. His initial forays into acting occurred in the theatre world, with his first stage appearance in Winterset at the Illinois Theatre Center in Chicago. After several years of stage performances, Shannon made his first film appearance in 1993’s Groundhog Day, starring Bill Murray. He would go on to appear in Pearl Harbor (2001), Vanilla Sky (2001), 8 Mile (2002), Kangaroo Jack (2003), Bad Boys II (2003), Bug (2006), Blackbird (2007), Jonah Hex (2010), Mud (2012), and Man of Steel (2013), among other films.
Shannon is well known for his portrayal of troubled side characters, and his performance in Revolutionary Road (2008) received an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. In 2015 he appeared in 99 Homes as Rick Carver, a performance that earned nominations for the Golden Globe Best Supporting Actor and Screen Actors Guild Award for Supporting Actor. His 2016 performance in Nocturnal Animals earned him his second Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. In addition to his film performances, he has appeared in Law & Order: SVU (2005), HBO’s Boardwalk Empire (2010 – 2014), and continually performs onstage at the Red Orchid Theatre in Chicago.
