Midnight Oil is an Australian alternative band with a career spanning five decades. It is lead by iconic front man Peter Garrett, the lead vocalist and harmonicist. Garrett was a university student when he answered an ad for a vocalist for the band Farm. Joining the group, he took over as its leader and rechristened it Midnight Oil, a name he drew from a hat. Midnight Oil’s line-up includes Rob Hirst (drums, vocals), Jim Moginie (guitar, keyboard), and Martin Rotsey (guitar), with some bass players rotating. The band is well-known for politically charged lyrics tackling important issues.
As of this writing, Midnight Oil has released eleven studio albums and forty singles. Most of their albums sold at least gold or platinum in Australia, with their 1987 album “Diesel and Dust” certified worldwide gold and platinum. This album contained their breakout single hit, “Beds Are Burning,” which was a worldwide top-ten single. Other than “Blue Sky Mine” (1990), most of their singles have remained popular in Australia while not being picked up abroad. Midnight Oil has won eleven ARIA awards and been inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.
